What is External Sounds?
External Sounds is a collective of dj's, musicians & visual artists from Drogheda, Ireland. We run a monthly music event on the first Saturday of each month at The Purple Room, Drogheda. The Resident djs are regularly joined by national as well as international guests on our nights.
Our dj's have played many venues and club nights nationally as well as been invited to play events in the Uk, Finland & Croatia. They have also played festivals such as DEAF, Drogheda Arts Festival, Sibin, Escape, and the Electric Elephant. The collective has also hosted its own tent at the Electric Picnic Festival in 2008 & 2009, as well as running Body & Soul FM at the festival in 2009.

History:
External Sounds was formed back in 2001 by a group of friends from around the Drogheda area. It was set up in reaction to what they believed was a lack of good music nights in the town of Drogheda for people that were into diverse and underground music. External Sounds main activity in the first few years was organizing out door free parties in the countryside around Drogheda. These nights could not just be categorized as simple 'raves', as the general ideas and in particular the music policy was a lot more diverse than anything similar happening in the area at the time. These outdoor events were generally kept low key with the emphasis on quality not quantity, with the numbers attending never more than a couple of hundred. These External Sounds events were always few and far between and it stayed that way until 2005 when a couple of its members who were now living in Manchester began to run External Sounds as a monthly night in the Rampant Lion. With a capacity of 150 and a 2am bar, the night had finally found an ideal home indoors. The music policy of the night continued to emphasis on good music whether it was played by a live band, solo artist or dj. External sounds eclectic mix of music from rock, to reggae, soul to samba, and everything in between was a hit with a similarly diverse crowd. While in Manchester, External Sounds didn't forget its Drogheda roots with several local artists making the trip over the Irish sea to perform at their nights.
As the external sounds members returned to Drogheda in 2006, so did the event and with a renewed passion spurned on by the nights success in Manchester. The night found a new home in Mc Guinness's Bar, (Crusoe's) Fusion Nightclub, Georges St. Its first Irish night back was billed as a 'Festival Warm-Up Gig' and took place on the eve of the Electric Picnic Festival, on Thursday 31st August 2006. The line-up on the night consisted of Irish band 'Geriko', a 'Copious' Dj set, an acoustic performance by Eoin McCabe and dj set from the External Sounds djs.The night was a resounding success with a very large crowd in attendance thoroughly enjoying themselves. The night has steadily grown in popularity and moved to The Purple Room on The Fairgreen, in April 2008, were it continues in the same form but now in a bigger venue. The night is still run on a monthly basis with the same diverse music policy, with the music being provided by band and djs from both Ireland and the UK.
In August 2008 the collective pull off a major coup when they got to host their own tent at the prestigious Electric Picnic Festival which takes place on the grounds of Stradbally Hall in Co Laois. The Following year the collective were invited to play at the Electric Elephant Festival in Croatia as well as been invited back to host their own tent again at the Electric Picnic as well as run Body & Soul Fm at the festival.
